Where your treasure is, there will your heart be. I have been thinking about this. There has been much in the news lately about the fiscal cliff, and I find it can be challenging not to worry about the financial circumstances attached the ineptitude of our country's leaders to work together and stop spending money we don't have. But I was reminded in recent days by two instances to refocus.
The first event was receiving a newsletter from a friend of mine. Her husband has had just part time work for at least the last two years. They are a family of five, and yet God has met their needs in incredible ways. When I think about their situation and hear of all that God has provided for them, I am encouraged! I remember that God is the ONE who takes care of us. He is the ONE we are trusting to meet our needs.
The second event was bringing home a bunch of our stuff that Mom and Dad had stored in their basement for us. I can't tell you how much fun it was to take all the plastic wrap off our picture frames and to place them on the walls. It sure made this place feel more like home! Kris and I LOVE photography, and each of our pictures reminds us of a time and place in our lives together. We have also tried to find paintings from the different countries we have visited. Hanging those on the walls brightens up the rooms and helps us not to forget the plight of others around the world who have so much less than we have.
As I was enjoying the pictures on my walls, a verse popped into my mind. Matthew 6:20-21, "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Our pictures are earthly treasures to us, but we will not be able to take them with us when we die. I thought about how thankful I am that the treasures I am storing in heaven will make my treasures here look like trash! I won't have to worry about them molding and rotting. I desire to store more in my heavenly home this new year!
