Garlic Cloves and Superiors

In the US if you are shopping or if you notice a service that a company is missing, you can suggest to one of the workers your idea and they in turn could share it with the manager. You may or may not see your hoped for service/product based on how many other customers express the same desire.

The concept of sharing an idea with your superior is as foreign here as aliens. For the past nine months I have been peeling garlic cloves piece by piece and mincing it in a press that I brought with me. Minced garlic in a jar is a product that hasn't yet made it to the Philippine grocery stores. Some friends invited us over for supper a couple of weeks ago, and he shared with me that you can press down on the clove with the flat of the knife, crushing it, and the skin will fall right off! I was so excited to see a way to cut down on the time it takes to peel garlic!

A few days later I excitedly shared this new discovery with my house girl as I was cooking. She informed me that she already knew this. I thought to myself, "You have watched me picking away at garlics for five months and never thought of sharing this WAY faster method with me!" She works three days a week for the Rivettes, the other couple that used to live with us. I told her, "You should show this to Miriam. I am sure she would want to know." Her response surprised me. "No, No, Ma'am." There was no way she would even consider telling her superior/employer of another way to do something. It is so foreign to us to watch someone do something the hard way and not say something if we know an easier way.
